Student Health Insurance Plan Information

Stevens requires that all undergraduate students, International students, and all full-time graduate students to have health insurance, and will charge health insurance every start semester and subsequent Fall semesters. For more information on the Stevens Student Health Insurance Plan, please contact University Health Plans at (800) 437-6448.

Stevens, based on the recommendation from the President’s Task Force on Mental Health is expanding student access to mental health through Stevens’ counseling staff, leveraging technology, increasing student access to local off-campus providers, and overcoming barriers imposed by limited insurance coverage.  Stevens is committed to each student having access to health insurance that provides access to mental health treatment. In order to achieve these goals, Stevens is requiring all undergraduate students, international students, and all full-time graduate students to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) or be covered by a comprehensive Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant health insurance plan. To ensure compliance, full-time students are automatically billed for the SHIP.

Waiver & Open Enrollment Deadlines (Current Academic Year)

  • September 15 - Undergraduate Students

  • September 15 - Graduate Students.

  • February 02 - Spring admits

Failure to waive the health insurance by the deadline will result in automatic enrollment in the Stevens Student Health Insurance Plan and the student's account will be charged accordingly.

Students will not be able to enroll in the health insurance plan after these deadlines unless there is a qualifying event that makes them eligible to enroll.  For additional information regarding enrollment, please contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448.

Waiver Process for Domestic Students

If you are covered by a comprehensive ACA compliant health insurance plan you can opt out of the SHIP by completing the waiver form, located at www.universityhealthplans.com/stevens in the left-hand side navigation menu. Before waiving compare the cost, coverage, and benefits of the SHIP to your existing plan. Please consider the following:

  • The plan must provide access to doctors, specialists, behavioral health care providers, hospitals, labs, and pharmacies in the Stevens campus area.

  • The plan must be a U.S. health insurance plan that is filed and approved in the U.S. and compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefit requirements.

Travel insurance and short-term limited duration plans are not accepted.

  • Out-of-state Medicaid and many out-of-state HMO or EPO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage

. Urgent and/or emergency-only coverage does not meet the insurance requirements.

If you do not submit a waiver form by the waiver deadline date above, you will be enrolled in SHIP and responsible for the premium.

Enrollment Process for Domestic Students

Students that are required to have health insurance and need coverage should confirm their enrollment in the SHIP by completing the enrollment form located at www.universityhealthplans.com/stevens in the left-hand side navigation menu. In order to activate coverage on the policy start date of August 18, 2021, you need to complete the online enrollment process. Part-time graduates enroll directly with University Health Plans and the part-time graduate student enrollment form is available in the left-hand side navigation menu.

Waiver Process for International Student

Stevens is requiring all international students to be insured with an ACA compliant, filed and approved policy in the U.S. Please note, health insurance plans marketed solely to International students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits, provider networks and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the Stevens insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements. Please contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 or [email protected] if you are covered by a U.S. health insurance plan that meets all of the waiver requirements to request the International Student Waiver Form.
