How did you get involved with Solar Decathlon?
I have a friend who was involved in Empower House. He made a Facebook status when the current project was just about to start. I commented that I definitely wanted in on the project and he sent me the date and time for the very first meeting for the house back around the end of the 2011 fall semester. I’ve been a part of the project since.
Are you excited for the Xpo in Irvine, California?
I’m very excited about the Xpo being in California. From what I’ve been told the previous competition in DC was rained on so a lot of the solar technologies all the houses used weren’t able to really show off their full potentials.

CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) is an association of 13,000 specifiers, architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers, product representatives, manufacturers, owners and others who are experts in building construction and the materials used therein. They volunteer their talents in the New York Metropolitan area and are dedicated to improving the communication of construction information through many methods.

The principal goals are to improve construction specifications and to advance building information management and education of project teams for higher quality outcomes. The fact that professionals are involved in the creation and management of the build environment confirms credibility of the standards and procedures followed in construction projects.

This week’s Student Spotlight features Daniel Munt, a chemical engineering major graduating in 2014.

How did you get involved with Solar Decathlon?
My roommate a couple years ago helped to build the house for the last competition and at the time I was taking Solar Energy Theory & Application MT 518 and started to be very interested in Solar Energy. The next solar class, MT 528 System Design, we actually sized a solar farm for a local church and I thought the skills and information I learned in these classes could really help out in the Decathlon. When I heard Dan Tipaldo was helping to lead the next competition, I asked to help out and now here I am.

This week’s Student Spotlight is featuring Kyle Buzby, a civil engineering major who recently graduated.

How did you get involved with Solar Decathlon?
I first heard about the Solar Decathlon in 2011 from several students working on the house built by Parsons and Stevens. After Stevens placed 13th and I heard that they were planning on building another house comprised entirely of Stevens students, I wanted to do anything possible to get involved.

Are you excited for the Xpo in Irvine, California? What are you planning on doing during your stay?
Yes! Currently, I do not know if I will be able to attend the expo, due to unset post-graduation plans at the time.

Our student team has shifted to become an alumni team as Ecohabit team members who have recently graduated stay committed to the project and have been helping build the house. Ecohabit members who recently graduated Stevens returned to their alma mater to see this great project come to fruition. Every day, team members congregate at the build site overlooking the beautiful NYC skyline to help build the house.

Our team has made a lot of progress so far and has demonstrated a work ethic that could only come from Stevens students. The ‘shell’ of the house is almost completed with our walls constructed and our iconic roof in place.
