2024 Outstanding Teacher Award Recipient

The Outstanding Teacher Award recognizes faculty members for their excellence in teaching. Each year, alumni from the five most recent graduated classes nominate and vote for a faculty member who inspired, prepared and motivated them while upholding intellectual integrity and professional ethics. 

Mishah Uzziél Salman, Ph.D.

Dr. Mishah Uzziél Salman, teaching associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is the 2024 recipient of the SAA Outstanding Teacher Award.

Salman holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic University (which is now New York University Tandon School of Engineering) and an M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, specializing in control systems, from Drexel University. He remained at Drexel after completing his doctorate, first as an adjunct instructor and then as a full-time teaching faculty member until 2013, when he joined Stevens.

Salman specializes in control systems design, control of aircraft operating under adverse conditions, robotics, mechatronics, MATLAB, dynamic systems, embedded control, real-time control, hardware programming, hardware-software interfacing, micro-controllers and basic electronic circuity design and fabrication. He is known for his creative approaches to solving problems and for his commitment to mentoring and team leadership.

He serves on the ME Ph.D. Qualifying – Core Competency and Research Competency Test Committees and the ME Undergraduate Program Committee. In addition, he is chair of the SES Academic Teaching and Mentoring team (ATEAM), the New Stevens Core Committee, and the ME Senior Design Task Force. He has also served on the ME Graduate Committee, the Academic Appeals Committee, the Dean’s Faculty Advisory Council and the Faculty Search Committee. He is a member of the Order of the Engineer and is active with IEEE, ASME and ASEE. His invention, a “unilateral dual transducer stereo headphone,” earned a U.S. Patent in 2017.

Salman is honored and humbled to receive this year’s SAA Outstanding Teacher Award. “It is so rewarding that alumni feel this way about my work,” he says.
