At some point during college most students will feel overwhelmed by the demands of school, family, friends, work or other relationships. They might even struggle with a significant mental health issue. During such times it can be highly beneficial to speak one-on-one with a therapist. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to help. We provide short-term therapy to help students process a variety of issues and concerns, including:
Depression
Anxiety
Stress
Parental Relationships
Intimate Relationships
Roommate Conflicts
What is expected of you in counseling?
Commitment to your treatment by showing up on time to your scheduled appointment and calling or emailing your therapist 24 hours in advance when you cannot make it to an appointment.
In addition to one-on-one psychotherapy, CAPS also offers group therapy and drop-in workshops:
Group Therapy
Often individuals can benefit from participating in group therapy even more so than in individual therapy. Group therapy provides a safe, confidential space to explore concerns as well as receive support on various issues. It is an opportunity to learn more about oneself, explore healthy behaviors and develop new ways of coping. Unlike workshops, our groups typically require a pre-screening. You can learn more about our current group offerings by clicking here.
Workshops
Unlike group therapy, workshops tend to have a drop-in style. These workshops typically offer opportunities to learn new skills or to be educated about a particular topic related to mental health. To learn more about our current workshop offerings, click here.
CAPS has a limited number of psychiatry appointments available each week for students. Because of the limited number of these appointments, they are only accessible to students whose needs meet a variety of criteria:
As a general rule, psychiatry services at CAPS are available only to students who cannot otherwise access psychiatric services using their insurance.
CAPS does not provide psychiatry only services. CAPS' psychiatry services are limited to students who are also being seen for psychotherapy at CAPS.
In circumstances where a student is ready to try psychiatric medication but cannot obtain a first off-campus psychiatry appointment for an extended period of time CAPS will on occasion provide transitional psychiatric care. These services are limited to students who provide proof of having obtained an off-campus psychiatry appointment to whom care will be transferred.
