Training

Stevens Institute requires training for laboratory employees to insure that they are adequately informed about the hazards present within the laboratory and methods for minimizing the risks of exposure.  "Laboratory employees" include faculty, staff, and students who work in a laboratory setting. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety provides a number of training courses for laboratory personnel. Below is a summary of the training programs offered at Stevens.

Laboratory Safety Training Programs

Laboratory Safety Training Schedule for 2021

Laboratory Safety Training Programs

Laboratory Safety/Chemical Hygiene Plan/Hazardous Waste Management

In compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard, Stevens must provide training for its laboratory employees at the time of their initial employment, each year thereafter and whenever new hazards are introduced into their laboratory environment. Laboratory personnel must also be trained on how to properly identify, collect, and dispose of hazardous waste generated in their lab.

Classroom Training (Provided by EHS) - Stevens Environmental Health and Safety Department requires all laboratory staff, students, as well as investigators, who may potentially come into contact with chemical hazards in the laboratory attend Laboratory Safety/Chemical Hygiene Plan training provided by The Office of Environmental Health and Safety. This program also provides information on how to properly identify, collect, and dispose of hazardous waste generated in the laboratory. All lab personnel are required to attend this training.

To find out the next scheduled training, contact The Office of Environmental Health and Safety at [email protected] or 201-216-8971.

Hands On/In Laboratory Training - An essential component of the laboratory safety training program is the hands-on or in-lab training which is given to all laboratory employees (full and part time) by the laboratory supervisor under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI). The training must include a review of lab specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), specific lab policies and/or procedures.

Laser Safety Training

Laser Safety Training is required for Class 3B, 3R and 4 laser users and recommended for all laser users. To be authorized to work with Class 3B, 3R, or 4 lasers you must complete an online tutorial and receive specific training on the systems you will use. Contact the office of EHS to register for the online training program.

Training on the specific laser systems you will use must be conducted by the responsible Principal Investigator (PI) or supervisor. The documentation of the specific training is kept on file in the lab.

Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) Training

Employees who handle Hydrofluoric Acid shall be trained on the hazards of HF and what to do in the event of an exposure or a spill. Prior to beginning work with HF, you must first contact EHS to discuss proposed work. Contact EHS if you are considering working with Hydrofluoric Acid.

Biological Safety/ Bloodborne Pathogens

Stevens Environmental Health and Safety Department require all laboratory staff, students, as well as investigators, who may potentially come into contact with biological materials in the laboratory attend a yearly biological safety training session.

Please contact Stevens EHS Department at X8971 or [email protected] for the next scheduled Biological Safety Training session.

If you would like to schedule a training program not listed on this page, please contact The Office of Environmental Health and Safety at [email protected] or 201-216-8971.
