Training a large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT even once can cost millions of dollars. To fund development of complex models, companies and universities are seeking to monetize their models. Patents on artificial intelligence (AI) inventions have emerged as a mechanism for translating research efforts into financing for R&D.

Join Patent Attorney Ryan McCormick ’12 for a discussion on all things patent in the AI space. Topics covered will include a high-level recap of artificial intelligence technologies, especially machine learning models. This will include a review of the kinds of machine learning models used by popular tools such as ChatGPT.

Additionally, Ryan will give an overview of how patent laws apply to AI-related inventions as well as considerations for would-be inventors working with AI. This will include practical considerations regarding using patents as a fundraising tool for researchers and startup founders.

Lastly, the discussion will cover some common questions about using AI to invent, including whether ChatGPT can be listed as an inventor on a patent application and potential legal consequences of using AI while inventing.
