Improving mathematics education is one of the fundamental problems in modern education and given the central role of mathematics in all STEM fields, it represents a major challenge for modern society as a whole. It has been understood for some time that solving this problem requires technology, which may include AI. There is currently a great deal of hype surrounding the capabilities of AI systems, notably large language models (LLMs), but there is also reason to believe that AI systems will form the basis of transformative educational technology. The Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Mathematics Education, which represents a collaboration between academia and industry, aims to conduct research that will help us understand, develop, and implement such technology.
