Changing the Conversation: Responding to Social Bias at Work

ABSTRACT: Have you ever thought, “I wish I said something…” after witnessing social bias — a stereotype, a prejudice or discrimination — that happened right in front of you? You’re not alone. Research suggests that although people often want to respond when bias occurs, many people find it difficult to do so. Recognizing these instances and deciding whether and how to respond will be explored through familiar workplace scenarios delivered by professional actors. This engaging research-based workshop will increase understanding about what motivates us to speak up or not speak up, the challenges we face when doing so, and concrete strategies to respond effectively. Scenarios will focus on interactions that involve hiring, performance evaluation, group decision making, and more.

PRESENTERS: A nationally recognized leader in diversity, equity and inclusion with experience in higher education as a scholar, educator and academic leader, Dr. Stephanie Goodwin facilitated the workshops. Relevant scenarios were presented by University of New Hampshire PowerPlay Interactive Development directed by Professor David Kaye (founder/artistic director).
