Space Volcanoes

“This is essentially the same mechanism that causes a shaken-up can of soda to explode when you pop it open — just on a much bigger scale.”

Jason Rabinovitch, Stevens School of Engineering and Science (SES) assistant professor, discussing an explanation for the factors leading to an eruption on a frozen moon in our solar system. The erupting geysers could be powered by the sudden expansion of dissolved gases as they escape through fissures in the moon’s surface.

Fairness in AI

“Our findings offer new perspectives on how to ensure fairness with respect to the real-life impacts in AI-driven decision-making. Our research suggests that unbiased and fair AI systems, which focus on the overall well-being of people, can be attained by adopting [specific] decision-making models.”

Violet Chen, Stevens School of Business (SSB) assistant professor, suggests a new way to think about the impacts of AI decisions with respect to fairness.

Unexpected Chemistry

“It turns out that you can’t assume there’s just one chemical pathway at work. When we looked more closely, we found that some unexpected and entirely new chemistry was taking place.”

Yong Zhang, SES professor, highlighting the ways in which hemoprotein catalysis — a reaction with potential implications for the way useful compounds are generated, including some important antibiotics — is considerably more complicated than previously believed.

AI Regulation

“In all our studies, ethical leadership positively influenced or was positively related to self-efficacy.”

Howie Xu, an SSB assistant professor, whose research is focused on leadership, workplace relationships and workplace emotions, reflects on the findings of his latest research that analyzed the impact of ethical leadership.
