Fall 2024 Letters to the Editor

Honoring Hazeltine

Kudos to Erin Lewis on the “Out of the Archives” piece on Professor Hazeltine (Spring ’24)! In my years at Stevens in the electrical engineering program, I knew of Hazeltine but had never seen this much good information on his work. I knew more [about] Edwin H. Armstrong, radio’s most prolific inventor (far left in that Electronics magazine front cover picture). Your article correctly mentions that the neutrodyne was replaced by the superheterodyne receiver (invented by Armstrong), yet Hazeltine’s technique of dealing with instability and oscillations, known as neutralization, lives on. It is still used with transistors to obtain low-noise amplifiers. The design methodology that Armstrong and Hazeltine employed was to understand a design comprehensively and mathematically, prior to building a physical device. They were the opposite of what we would call “hackers”!

Cheering ‘The Solver’

I want to compliment your team on the latest Indicator (Spring ’24). The fresh and vibrant product shows the success of the changes made in the last year or so. I especially enjoyed “The Solver” with Tony Callendrello, a fellow classmate. The artist created a spot-on likeness to Tony. The piece was entertaining and informative, with just the right amount of humor. I hope you continue “The Solver” as a series going forward.

Canoers Captured

Two young men are in a canoe, one behind the other. The man in front is sitting, holding an oar in both hands over his head. The man in back is kneeling, also holding an oar in both hands over his head.Editor’s Note:  In the Spring ’24 issue, we published a photo of two students competing in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Concrete Canoe Competition and asked readers to identify the students. One wrote to us:

“The two students paddling this expertly designed and finely crafted concrete canoe are none other than me, John Schuring (front of boat), and Richard DiLouie (rear), proud members of the Class of 1974. That day, we won our races, and Stevens ASCE was the reigning regional Concrete Canoe champion over all the area’s engineering colleges that year.”
