The View
As I walk across our campus, I am continually impressed by the vibrant mix of our student community. Students come from all corners of the globe, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences. They are all bright, driven and full of purpose. Among them are students with disabilities, some whose disability may be visible, others not.
The presence of students with disabilities is growing, not just at Stevens but nationwide. Recent data reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education reveals a striking trend: Over the past five years, we have seen a 64 percent increase in the number of universities where at least one in 10 undergraduates reports having a disability. This significant shift reflects higher education’s growing commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.
At Stevens, we see these students thriving. They are launching companies, conducting groundbreaking research, leading organizations and contributing innovative ideas. Their problem-solving approaches, talents and resilience enrich our campus immeasurably.
These students face a range of challenges, from mobility issues to learning differences, sensory disabilities and other health conditions. Our Office of Disability Services — with strong support from our faculty and staff partners across campus — plays a crucial role in supporting them. They provide a variety of accommodations, such as assistive technology and quiet testing spaces, ensuring these students can fully engage in their academic pursuits.
Our commitment to inclusion and representation is unwavering. We believe that providing access to students from all backgrounds is crucial for cultivating the innovative mindset needed to tackle global challenges. It’s important to note that all of our students, regardless of background, must meet the same rigorous academic standards that define a Stevens education.
As we face environmental challenges, health crises and economic disparities, we need all the bright minds we can nurture. Our students with disabilities are essential to our mission of using technology and innovation to create a better world. The work of our support services isn’t just about compliance; it is about empowering talented individuals to become the problem-solvers our society needs.
What sets Stevens apart is how our multifaceted community drives progress. Every student here contributes to the rich tapestry of ideas and solutions that will shape our future. We are not just preparing for tomorrow — we are creating it.
