Stevens Continues to Cement Role as Leader in Online Learning
Strategic investments and outstanding student outcomes contributed to Stevens receiving top billing in the U.S. News and World Report online graduate education rankings
(Hoboken, N.J. – Jan. 26, 2021) – Bolstered by a continued investment in technology, top-notch faculty and exceptional student outcomes, Stevens Institute of Technology has been named as one of the top providers of online graduate programs in the state and nation in the rankings published today by U.S. News & World Report.
Stevens placed in six disciplines across the School of Business, Schaefer School of Engineering & Science and School of Systems & Enterprises, ranking No. 1 in New Jersey across five of those—Best Online MBA, Best Online Graduate Engineering, Best Online Graduate Computer Information Technology, Best Online Engineering Specialties for Industrial (Systems) Engineering and Best Online MBA Specialties for Business Analytics.
“As more and more students turn to remote learning due to the pandemic, these rankings are evidence of Stevens’ leadership in online education and the excellence of our graduate programs,” said Provost Christophe Pierre, Stevens’ chief academic officer. “It is an honor to be featured in these rankings and it is a testament to the remarkable collaborative effort of our university community during a difficult period in all our lives.”
National rankings for all six disciplines include:
Best Online Graduate Computer Information Technology, No. 8
Best Online Engineering Specialties for Industrial (Systems) Engineering, No. 8
Best Online MBA Specialties for Business Analytics, No. 16
Best Online Graduate Engineering, No. 21
Best Online Graduate Business, No. 14
Best Online MBA, No. 35
Stevens rankings have increased across all categories over the past five years. Most notably, compared to the 2016 rankings, Stevens has risen 53 spots from No. 88 for Best Online MBA, 17 spots from No. 38 for Best Online Graduate Engineering and 19 spots from No. 33 for Best Online Graduate Business.
The 2021 rankings follow numerous strategic investments, including providing a wide-range of additional services to students such as academic coaches and access to Stevens’ world-class career center. Stevens has also continued to expand its offering of online programs, adding a new data science program this year.
“We are constantly considering how we can expand and enhance our programs in order to deliver a world-class education to our students,” said Costas Chassapis, senior vice provost for graduate education. “Our faculty are equipped to teach at a high-level, students and faculty have frequent interactions, and we are constantly expanding the services and resources offered. The result of these investments is an education where students not only learn the curriculum, but become comfortable working and collaborating in a virtual environment, which is more important than ever to excel in the workforce.”
Stevens has continued to see increases in new student enrollment for its online graduate programs. In Fall 2020, enrollment increased to 225 from 138 in Fall 2019, or 63%. The majority of online graduate students are working professionals due to its flexibility, especially for non-traditional students.
“As more people become aware of the advantages of online learning, we are seeing further growth in our programs,” explained Chassapis. “Students enroll to achieve a variety of goals—many want to enhance their skill set to excel or future-proof themselves at their current jobs, while others are looking to begin or transition to an entirely new field.”
Those who enroll with the goal of finding a job have seen exceptional outcomes. At Stevens, 94% of graduate students seeking jobs— including both online and traditional students— secure employment within three months of graduation with an average compensation of $87,320 and average signing bonus of $15,166.
For each discipline, U.S. News evaluated five categories: student engagement, expert opinion, faculty credentials and training, student excellence, and student services and technologies. For the 2021 edition, U.S. News assessed more than 1,600 online degree programs – an all-time high.
