We are now accepting submissions for the 3rd Annual MLK Oratorical Contest. The MLK Oratorical Contest at Stevens is hosted by the Phi Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The purpose of the contest is to encourage oratorical skills among students and celebrate the legacy of renown orator, Civil Rights leader, and change agent, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In addition to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at Stevens Institute of Technology, all New Jersey and NYC middle and high school students are encouraged to join the contest. One winner will be selected from each of the four educational categories (Middle School: Grade 6-8; High School: Grades 9-12; Stevens Undergraduate Students; Stevens Graduate Students). All four winners will be invited to perform during the Annual MLK Week of Service taking place from January 27-31, 2025 at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.

Instructions:

  • Record a 2-5 minute video with your rendition of one of the following options: 1) One of Dr. King's speeches or known writings, or 2) Your original speech, song, or poem on the topic of Dr. King's legacy

  • Upload your recording along with information about yourself via this form. Due:

    January 10, 2024, at 11:59PM.

Process:

After reviewing all submissions, a panel of judges from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will select the four oratorical contest winners. All winners, including up to 5 friends and/or family members, will be invited to attend the in-person MLK Week of Service celebration at Stevens. Each winner will deliver their winning submission in-person and receive their award at the community luncheon on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 from 12-2PM.
