Stevens & Montclair State University 3+2 Program
Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) and Montclair State University (Montclair) are proud to offer an Articulated Baccalaureate-Master’s Program designed to streamline your journey toward a career in engineering. This innovative program enables students to earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Physics from Montclair and a Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens, combining the strengths of two prestigious institutions.
Students in this program spend their first three years at Montclair State University working on the requirements for a B.S. in Physics. In Year 4 of the program they enroll full-time in the Masters program at Stevens Institute of Technology, working toward their M.E. in Mechanical Engineering. Some of those M.E. courses will also count towards finishing the requirements for the B.S. Physics degree, awarded at the end of Year 4, with the M.E. degree awarded by Stevens at the end of Year 5.
Program Highlights
Dual-Degree Opportunity: Complete your B.S. at Montclair and seamlessly transition into Stevens’ renowned Mechanical Engineering graduate program.
Advisory Support: Benefit from a dedicated advisory committee of faculty and staff from both institutions, guiding your academic and professional success.
Strong Employment Prospects: Physics and Mechanical Engineering are rigorous technical degrees that prepare students for a wide-range of career opportunities.
Course Information
A complete list of courses and suggested sequence can be found in the curriculum guide for the program. Note that this is a rigorous program, and most physics requirements need to be completed within 3 years. Students will be expected to take a full load of courses during their 6 semesters at Montclair (typically 16 to 18 credits per semester). Students starting their math coursework in calculus 1 are best prepared to complete their Montclair requirements within three years. Those interested in the program should arrange a meeting with their program advisor at Montclair State University to help find the most efficient course sequence.
Eligibility and Admission
Students interested in this program must notify the program advisor (Dr. Marc Favata) in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Montclair State University about their interest at the time of their admission, i.e. beginning of Year 1. At this stage, students are considered candidates for the program and are required to meet with their faculty advisor at least once a semester by appointment. Students should follow the modified General Education requirements for this program (see curriculum guide below). Note that admission into the M.E. program at Stevens is not guaranteed. By the end of Year 2, the advisor will determine if the candidate is on-track to complete the requisite courses at Montclair. The student must also achieve the program GPA requirement (at least a 3.2 overall and 3.0 in-major) to qualify for the dual-degree program. If the student is on-track, they will be interviewed by a committee consisting of Montclair and Stevens faculty members. Upon that committee’s recommendation, the student will then formally apply for graduate admission to Stevens. Stevens will notify the student of acceptance during the spring term of Year 3. If accepted, the appropriate coursework at Stevens starts at the beginning of Year 4. During Years 4 and 5 the student is enrolled in the graduate program at Stevens and pays Stevens graduate tuition.
Applying to the Program
Admission to this program begins with application to the undergraduate physics B.S. degree at Montclair. Once admitted to the undergraduate part of the program, you should consult with your Montclair physics advisor on the timeline and requirements for applying to the Stevens graduate degree program.
To apply to Stevens, you must complete a Stevens online application form. When creating your account, please use the same email address you used for your Montclair application. In the area “Financial Support,” you will see a category for “University Affiliates or Institutional Agreements.” Please answer “Yes” to the question about whether you will attend as part of a university affiliate or institutional agreement, and select Montclair State University 3+2 from the dropdown menu. These steps are critical in helping us to accurately track your application under this agreement.
Once you have submitted all required application materials, you can expect to hear from your admission advisor regarding next steps.
