The Power of Connection

A message from SAA President John Dearborn, Jr. ’79 M.Eng. ’81.

My five formative years at Stevens created a deep-rooted connection that was rekindled several years back. I want to share some of that story.

At the height of my career, I was working across the globe, raising a family and participating in my community. I remained connected with some faculty and fellow students, but it had been a long time since I had been back to campus. About 13 years ago, I returned for a visit, and as soon as I stepped onto Wittpenn Walk, I immediately felt that deep connection again.

Standing in front of my old dorm, Davis Hall, brought back such incredible memories of my time at Stevens and the education that launched my career and lifelong experiences. In that moment, I called my wife Michele and said, “We need to do something.” So we made a gift that enabled students to travel to Central America to install a water project for a community in need. After receiving thank-you letters from the students, I was inspired even more to give back. We hosted gatherings at our home for alumni and supporters, I joined the Board of Trustees, and more recently became president of the Stevens Alumni Association.

As alumni, the connection we share with Stevens is like no other. I encourage you to engage with our alma mater. Please read the emails we send. When fellow alumni reach out to you, answer the call. Come back to campus for Alumni Weekend or participate in a regional event. Collaborate with networks like our Industry Torch Bearers on StevensConnects, at stevens.edu/StevensConnects. Volunteer your time or make a gift to support students. Your participation makes a meaningful impact. Together, we are a thriving network of dynamic innovators and successful people who share in the legacy of Stevens. Through your engagement and contribution of time and treasure, you elevate our extraordinary legacy for future generations.
