Inclusive Leadership Certification Requirements

How to Get Certified as an Inclusive leader

The Inclusive leadership Certification program was designed such that one can ideally complete it across 3 to 5 academic semesters, however, you may choose to complete it over a shorter or longer period of time. It consists of 4 related activities. They include training, post event reflection, drafting your personal Inclusive leadership statement and real-world application in the form of a project.

Training

Your 20 training hours can include any of the following:

  • Inclusive Leadership Program Workshops, Training and Speaker Events. Different events are scheduled each semester. For the most current event schedule check the Events page

  • University DEI training and workshops (for more information, see the description at the bottom of this page)

  • Other relevant events and training (see for example, the LinkedIn Learning modules at the bottom of this page)

Panel of inclusive design experts speak with students in a classroomDesigning for Inclusion: Executive Panel Discussion is an example of the types of events you'll attend. This speaker panel featured experts from Apple, IBM and more sharing their experience and insights on how businesses are designing for inclusion, meeting the diverse needs of their customers and driving social impact.

Post Training

To get full credit for participating in a training event You need to submit a brief post event reflection for any workshop or event you attend. This should be roughly 2-4 paragraphs describing your takeaways such as something new you learned, a view or belief that was confirmed, significant reactions or feelings based upon your participation and or your thoughts about how the event led you to examine underlying assumptions, values or beliefs. It can also include 1-2 actions you’ll commit to doing based upon what you learned or experienced.

Your Inclusive Leadership Statement

3-4 sentences (roughly a paragraph) describing:

  • Your definition of inclusive leadership

  • Key values or guiding principles for you

  • Specific outcomes or goals toward which you will work. Examples include:

    • How you want to impact others

    • Things you will do to shape/impact inclusion within the organizations you are a part of

    • How you will continue learning

    • What you want to be known for/how you want to be regarded in 5-10 years because of your commitment to inclusive leadership

Application Project - Inclusive Leadership in Practice

You will need to complete a project related to inclusive leadership and provide a summary of the work you did. Expect your project to represent roughly 30 hours of work and it can be something you undertake in collaboration with others. This project work can include:

  • A project or assignment that is part of a particular course

  • Something you did as a member of a club, team or other student organization

  • A student design project

  • Related volunteer work on or off campus

  • Internships/Work

  • Facilitation work in support of the Inclusive Leadership Certificate Program

NOTE: You will need to get approval in advance before starting your project. The program directors can also help you develop project ideas
